Care
In the rock musical Hair, one of the characters asks the question,
"Oh, how can people have no feelings? How can they ignore their friends?"
She then goes on to observe that it's often hardest to care about those
closest to us.
Lots of things written about churches warn us about turning inward and
ignoring the world "out there." In the words of the Hair character
we are to be people "who care about strangers, who care about evil and
social injustice."
But as the Hair character asks, "Do you only care about the
bleeding crowd? How about a needing friend? I need a friend..."
It's not only about the bleeding crowd. The person sitting next to you in
the pew needs you, too.
What do we care about? Each other - that's as good a place to start as any.
